In the first installment of our student-led Meet the New Faculty series, get to know Ms. Bove!
Welcome to St. Mary’s! Tell us who you are and what you’ll be teaching.
My name is Ms. Bove, or Elizabeth Bove—whichever you prefer! I teach five math classes: one Geometry Honors class, two regular Geometry classes, one Pre-Calculus class, and one Algebra I Honors class. I’m also the Math Department Chair.
What made you go into teaching?
I’ve always wanted to be a teacher, ever since elementary school. My best friend and I used to play school when we were younger, taking turns being the teacher and the students. I originally thought I wanted to be an elementary school teacher, but during my senior year of college, I realized I didn’t want to work with kindergarteners and deal with runny noses, tying shoes, and things like that! So, I went back to school to get my grades 7–12 math certification. I’ve always liked math because it came easily to me. It was something that just made sense.
Where did you go to college, and what was your degree?
I attended St. Joseph’s College, which is now St. Joseph’s University, in Patchogue. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Mathematics. Then, I attended Queens College to earn my grades 7–12 math certification. I later returned to St. Joseph’s for my master’s degree in Special Education and Secondary Education.
What are you most excited about this year?
I’m excited about learning more about your school, discovering what makes you happy, and getting to know the traditions and fun activities you celebrate. I’m excited to be part of all of that with you. I also want to make math as fun as possible because I understand that math isn’t always everyone’s favorite subject!
What is something students might be surprised to learn about you?
I’m an only child!
What do you like to do when you’re not teaching?
I run a bowling league every Friday. I also love watching TV and feeling lazy on the couch with my cat! I enjoy spending time with my niece and nephew, and doing fun things outdoors, like apple picking. I like getting out of the house and trying different activities.
