In the second installment of our student-led Meet the New Faculty series, get to know Mr. Edwards!
Welcome to St. Mary’s! Tell us who you are and what you’ll be teaching.
My name is Mr. Edwards. I will be teaching various math classes, I believe, over various years, but this year I’m teaching Algebra 2, AP Calculus, College Algebra, and Accounting.
What made you go into teaching?
I always really liked teaching, even when I was a student in high school. I would help students, showing them how to do things, especially mathematics. In college I was a math tutor, and various things happened. I had a marketing degree, COVID happened, and then I went back to school to get my master’s degree in education.
Where did you go to college and what was your degree?
I went to college at St. John’s University. My undergraduate degree was in marketing, and then my graduate’s degree was in education for mathematics.
What are you most excited for this year?
I am really excited to teach calculus, which sounds nerdy I guess, but I really like calculus and some of the things you can do with it.
What is something students might be surprised to learn about you?
I used to play baseball, and I was on the team at my high school. There’s a lot of things actually. I know how to solve a Rubix cube, and I used to do magic.
What do you like to do when you’re not teaching?
I play games, typically. Anything from video games to board games to sudoku or crossword puzzles. I really do enjoy puzzles and games, it’s kind of part of who I am.
